Two questions about Trinity Sunday that are worth noting today: first, where does it state in the Bible that there is the three-in-one and one-in-three entity; and second, is Trinity Sunday part of the Easter Season or not? Let’s look at the second question, first since that is a question that I always wondered why we celebrate this important Feast on the Sunday after the Easter Season ended. Could it have been during the Easter Season? Of course, the answer is that it could be scheduled at any time during the year – but when does it make sense to schedule it?

The reason for the 50 days of Easter Season is all about Jesus’ life after His Resurrection and His time here on earth. Secondly, Trinity Sunday is about the theology that Jesus taught about His (and our) Father and that the disciples and us had to wait for the third person – the Holy Spirt - to come to us. We, of course, know that it happened on Pentecost, which we celebrated last Sunday. Since we-“know” about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we now can celebrate the three-in-one and one-in-three of the Trinity. Therefore, the
Church has decided it is appropriate to celebrate it on the first Sunday after the Easter Season has concluded. What about the question, where in the Bible… as far as I know, the use of the word “trinity” may not be in there, but in Matthew’s Gospel (see below) and in Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians (chp. 2), as well as a few other places, there is an indication about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We have heard the quote of Jesus in Mt 28:19 a number of times recently: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

And then in Matthew 3, we know the description of Jesus’ own baptism where the Spirit descends upon him in the appearance of a dove and the words of the Father from Heaven, “This is my beloved Son...” 

While this doesn’t explain the theological concept of the Trinity, it does point to the source – the Bible – specifically, the New Testament (Christian Scripture), specifically the Gospel according to Matthew. Hoy vale la pena plantearse dos preguntas sobre el Domingo de la Trinidad: en primer lugar, ¿en qué parte de la Biblia se afirma
que existe una entidad «tres en uno y uno en tres»?; y, en segundo lugar, ¿forma parte el Domingo de la Trinidad del tiempo pascual o
no? Veamos primero la segunda pregunta, ya que siempre me he preguntado por qué celebramos esta importante fiesta el domingo
después de que haya terminado el tiempo pascual. ¿Podría haber sido durante el tiempo pascual? Por supuesto, la respuesta es que
podría celebrarse en cualquier momento del año, pero ¿cuándo tiene sentido celebrarla?

La razón de los 50 días del tiempo pascual tiene que ver con la vida de Jesús tras su resurrección y su tiempo aquí en la tierra. En
segundo lugar, el Domingo de la Trinidad trata de la teología que Jesús enseñó sobre su (y nuestro) Padre y de que los discípulos y nosotros tuvimos que esperar a que la tercera persona —el Espíritu Santo— viniera a nosotros. Nosotros, por supuesto, sabemos que
ocurrió en Pentecostés, que celebramos el domingo pasado. Puesto que «conocemos» al Padre, al Hijo y al Espíritu Santo, ahora podemos celebrar el tres en uno y el uno en tres de la Trinidad. Por lo tanto, la Iglesia ha decidido que es apropiado celebrarlo el primer domingo tras la conclusión del tiempo pascual.

¿Qué hay de la pregunta de dónde aparece en la Biblia…? Por lo que yo sé, puede que la palabra «trinidad» no aparezca allí, pero en el Evangelio de Mateo (véase más abajo) y en la segunda carta de Pablo a los Corintios (cap. 2), así como en algunos otros lugares, hay una indicación sobre el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo.

Hemos escuchado varias veces recientemente la cita de Jesús en Mt 28,19: «Id, pues, y haced discípulos a todas las naciones, autizándolos en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo».

Y luego, en Mateo 3, conocemos la descripción del propio bautismo de Jesús, donde el Espíritu desciende sobre él en forma de paloma y las palabras del Padre desde el cielo: «Este es mi Hijo amado...». Aunque esto no explica el concepto teológico de la Trinidad,
sí apunta a la fuente —la Biblia—, concretamente al Nuevo Testamento (las Escrituras cristianas), y más concretamente al Evangelio

“El Señor, Dios, compasivo y clemente, paciente, misericordioso y fiel” (Éxodo 34, 6)

Si tuvieras que describir a Dios en unas pocas palabras, ¿que dirias? En la primera lectura de hoy, Dios pasa por delante de Moises y así nos da su propia respuesta: dice que es “compasivo y clemente” y “paciente, misericordioso y fiel” (Éxodo 34, 6). Por eso, en esta fiesta de la Santísima Trinidad, celebramos que Dios se ha manifestado de un modo tan conmovedor y elevemos una oración diciendo: “Padre celestial, te alabo porque siempre tienes el control de todo. Tus planes no pueden ser impedidos por los planes de ningún enemigo. Yo soy tu hijo, amado y querido, llamado y apartado para ti y sé que puedo descansar en ti. Confío en ti, te alabo y te doy gracias por acercarme a mi y a mis seres queridos a ti.

“Señor Jesús, tú manifestaste la humildad de Dios cuando te hiciste un niño y te sometiste bajo la autoridad de una madre y un padre aquí en la tierra. Por eso, yo no tengo miedo de reconocer mi debilidad y pequeñez. Tu me mostraste lo importante que es obedecer a tu Padre celestial cuando te quedaste atrás en Jerusalén como un preadolescente independiente. De nuevo mostraste humildad cuando te sometiste al bautismo de Juan, resististe las tentaciones del diablo y te vaciaste en la cruz. Gracias a ti, puedo decir si a mi Padre. Gracias a ti, puedo resistir la tentación del pecado e incluso puedo ofrecer tu amor y sanación a aquellos que me rodean. “Espíritu Santo, tu eres la gloria de Dios que ha sido derramada para mostrarnos un adelanto de la gloria del cielo. Tu eres el que
nos transforma y nos consuela . Estoy muy agradecido porque tu estas conmigo y moras en mi corazón mientras vivo en la tierra.

“He breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them,
and whose sins you retain are retained.’” (John 20:22–23) 

For those of us who go to confession regularly, there is often a familiar frustration: “Why do I keep confessing the same sins?”  It can feel like a loop, cleansed but unchanged.

Pentecost reveals a hopeful perspective. When the Risen Jesus breathes on his ashamed and fearful disciples and gives them the Holy Spirit, he echoes Genesis, when God breathes life into Adam. This is not just primarily the removal of guilt, but new creation. 

In confession, we receive more than forgiveness. We receive a fresh outpouring, the breath of the Spirit, and a renewed mission. Jesus does not say to us, “You’re forgiven, now go back to your old life.” He says, so to speak, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” (John 20:21) 

That is why penance is not just saying a few prayers. It is reorientation. It is the Spirit summoning us to live differently: with mercy and healing. 

Just as Adam was sent into the world, and the Apostles were sent out after Pentecost, so too we are sent from the confessional — not just clean, but consecrated. 

Pentecost Challenge: After your next confession, ask the Holy 
Spirit for one way you can participate in Christ’s healing will for 
you. Then take one small, concrete step, and do not look back.

There are a number of Gospels and other New Testament readings that are “available” to use for Pentecost. One of my favorites (John’s Gospel, Chapter 20) contains the words: “Jesus said to them again, 'Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.' And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit…' ” 

One of the reasons these words resonate with me is that we heard them on Easter, the Sunday after Easter, and on Pentecost. They are so important that the Church makes them available at least three times during this holy season. Jesus has sent His disciples to spread the Good News (the Gospel), the Word of God, that we are saved! He has sent us the Holy Spirit whom we have received at Baptism and Confirmation and we commemorate today! 

We are reminded that we are a missionary church by the presence of the missionary priest representing the Cross Catholic Outreach organization, Fr. Eloy Romero-Rojas. He is here to speak of the good news that he and others have been spreading throughout the world – because of the Holy Spirit. I ask that you respect him, listen to him, and spread the good news that the Holy Spirit and Jesus, as well as the Word of God in the Roman Catholic Church, in the CCNCC and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, is alive and well!

Hay varios pasajes del Evangelio y otras lecturas del Nuevo Testamento que se pueden «utilizar» para Pentecostés. Uno de mis 
favoritos (el Evangelio de Juan, capítulo 20) contiene las siguientes palabras: «Jesús les dijo de nuevo: “La paz esté con vosotros. 
Como el Padre me ha enviado, así os envío yo”. Y, dicho esto, sopló sobre ellos y les dijo: “Recibid el Espíritu Santo…”» 

Una de las razones por las que estas palabras me llegan al corazón es que las escuchamos en Pascua, el domingo después de 
Pascua y en Pentecostés. Son tan importantes que la Iglesia las pone a nuestra disposición al menos tres veces durante este tiempo santo. ¡Jesús ha enviado a sus discípulos a difundir la Buena Nueva (el Evangelio), la Palabra de Dios, de que somos salvos! ¡Nos ha enviado al Espíritu Santo, a quien hemos recibido en el Bautismo y la Confirmación y a quien conmemoramos hoy! 

La presencia del sacerdote misionero que representa a la organización Cross Catholic Outreach, el P. Eloy Romero-Rojas, nos 
recuerda que somos una Iglesia misionera. Está aquí para hablar de la buena nueva que él y otros han estado difundiendo por todo el mundo, gracias al Espíritu Santo. Les pido que lo respeten, lo escuchen y difundan la buena nueva de que el Espíritu Santo y 
Jesús, así como la Palabra de Dios en la Iglesia Católica Romana, en la CCNCC y en la Diócesis Católica Romana de Albany, ¡están

“Reciban el Espíritu Santo” (Juan 20, 22) 
¡Feliz festa de Pentecostes! 

La llegada del Espíritu Santo que celebramos hoy era una promesa que Jesus les hizo a sus apóstoles y a todos los que creyeran en él, y eso nos incluye a nosotros. El Señor sabía que ellos necesitan de guía divina, sabiduría y fortaleza para vivir la nueva vida a la cual él los estaba llamando. De la misma manera, él sabe que nosotros también necesitamos esos dones. Asi que nos dice también a nosotros: “Reciban el Espíritu Santo” (Juan 20, 22) 

En el Credo proclamamos que el Espíritu Santo es el “dador de vida”. Él es la Persona de la Trinidad que nos da la vida nueva en 
Cristo y que nos libera de la muerte y del pecado. Él es el que nos capacita para actuar y vivir de un modo que glorifique al Señor. 
De modo que si hay un pecado que no puedes abandonar, “recibe el Espíritu Santo”. El te va a ayudar a salir de las tinieblas 
y te ofrece nueva vida cuando el pecado te causa una muerte espiritual. Abre tu corazón y déjalo entrar. 

En la Misa de hoy, tambien rezaremos Veni, Sancte Spiritus la Secuencia de Pentecostes: “Ven, Espiritu divino”. Por eso, pídele al Espíritu Santo que venga a tu corazón diciéndole: “Riega la tierra en sequía, sana el corazón enfermo, lava las manchas”. 
Pídele que te ayude a renunciar al pecado. 

Si sientes que podrías haberte alejado del Señor, “recibe el Espíritu Santo”. Puedes rezar diciendo: “Infunde calor de vida en el 
hielo, doma el espíritu indómito, guía al que tuerce el sendero”.  Pídele que te muestre el camino para regresar a Dios. Si te sientes abrumado por la tristeza, “recibe el Espíritu Santo”. Clama a él diciendo: “Manda tu luz desde el cielo… fuente del mayor consuelo… Ven, dulce huésped del alma, descanso de nuestro esfuerzo… gozo que enjuga las lágrimas.” Pídele al Espíritu que 
te llene de alegría.

Over the last two weeks, we have reviewed some of the changes, and transition, from three individual parishes with separate pastors, to where we are now – still with separate parishes, but with one pastor. Additionally, previously, each parish pastor lived in the rectory associated with its parish. That started to change when Fr. George was assigned, he lived in Chatham, with Fr. Dan as the associate pastor, moving to Stuyvesant. The Valatie rectory became the Central Office and the Stottville rectory was used for various purposes. When Fr. Dan was transferred, the Stuyvesant rectory was unoccupied until I was assigned. The transition from Fr. George to me could’ve been smoother, but I hope we have learned from our mutual experiences and see that going back to one pastor per parish is
not possible in the next ten plus years.

Linking parishes or networking 2 or 3 together is a way to keep parishes open. Working together in one faith community like ours, sharing one pastor, sharing staff, sharing a Central Office, sharing a common Mass schedule (weekend and daily Mass times) as we do, is one model. We also have a shared music director, shared Faith Formation program and much more. As I stated previously, I apologize to those whom I thought already understood the “network” or linked parish model. While some are still adjusting to these changes, please rest assured that there are still plenty of things that are unique to each individual parish, but many things need to be shared. However, one of the important people I forgot to mention was Beth Lenahan, who was hired by Fr. George to be responsible for media and communications for the CCNCC and ultimately coordinating the new bulletin and website. She worked both in the St. James office, as well as in the Central Office, until her “retirement.” Next week, a I’ll cover another particularly important part of our tri-parish community: our Hispanic community.

Cambios, transiciones y perspectivas de futuro del CCNCC

Durante las últimas dos semanas, hemos repasado algunos de los cambios y la transición que se ha producido desde la situación de tres parroquias independientes con párrocos distintos hasta donde nos encontramos ahora: seguimos teniendo parroquias independientes, pero con un solo párroco. Además, anteriormente, cada párroco vivía en la casa parroquial asociada a su parroquia. Eso empezó a cambiar cuando se asignó al P. George, que vivía en Chatham, con el P. Dan como vicario, y se trasladó a Stuyvesant. La casa parroquial de Valatie se convirtió en la Oficina Central y la de Stottville se utilizó para diversos fines. Cuando el P. Dan fue trasladado, la casa parroquial de Stuyvesant quedó desocupada hasta que me asignaron a mí. La transición del padre George a mí podría haber sido más fluida, pero espero que hayamos aprendido de nuestras experiencias mutuas y veamos que volver a tener un solo párroco por parroquia no es posible en los próximos diez años o más.

Vincular parroquias o crear una red de dos o tres juntas es una forma de mantenerlas abiertas. Trabajar juntos en una comunidad de fe como la nuestra, compartiendo un párroco, personal, una Oficina Central y un horario común de misas (horarios de fin de semana y diarios), tal y como hacemos, es un modelo. También compartimos director musical, programa de formación en la fe y mucho más. Como dije anteriormente, pido disculpas a aquellos que pensé que ya entendían el modelo de «red» o de parroquias vinculadas. Aunque algunos todavía se están adaptando a estos cambios, tengan la seguridad de que sigue habiendo muchas cosas que son exclusivas de cada parroquia individual, pero hay muchas otras que deben compartirse. Sin embargo, una de las personas importantes
que olvidé mencionar fue Beth Lenahan, contratada por el P. George para encargarse de los medios de comunicación y las comunicaciones de la CCNCC y, en última instancia, coordinar el nuevo boletín y el sitio web. Trabajó tanto en la oficina de St. James como en la Oficina Central hasta su «jubilación». Las palabras de Jesús en la liturgia de hoy son como un testamento que se cumple con la llegada del Consolador: “Si ustedes me aman, guardarán mis mandamientos, y yo rogaré al Padre y les dará otro Protector que permanecerá siempre con ustedes” (Juan 14:15). ¿Qué nos toca cumplir a nosotros ante la petición de Jesús? Solamente una cosa: cumplir los mandamientos; es decir, vivir según el Evangelio, siendo caritativos y generosos. Aunque nos cueste dejar el egoísmo, la misericordia puede vencer por medio del amor.

“Cuántas personas se han alejado, por ejemplo, de la parroquia o comunidad por el ambiente de habladurías, de celos, de envidias que han encontrado. También para un cristiano, el saber amar no es un dato adquirido una vez para siempre; hay que volver a empezar cada día, hay que ejercitarse para que nuestro amor hacia los hermanos y hermanas que encontramos se vuelva maduro y purificado de aquellos límites o pecados que lo hacen parcial, egoísta, estéril e infiel. Cada día se debe aprender el arte de amar” (Papa Francisco, 21 de mayo de 2017). Más claro que el agua no puede ser: el Espíritu Santo nos acompaña, y la muestra de nuestro amor a Jesús está en practicar los mandamientos. Pidámosle a Jesús que nos ayude con su gracia a ser dóciles a la voz de Dios. La vida es difícil; se presentan muchas cosas cada día, pero por lo menos seamos coherentes en la fe. ©LPi   Amén
