This Sunday’s Gospel concludes the Bread of Life Discourse in Chapter 6 of John’s Gospel, with Peter’s faith statement and rhetorical question:  Lord, to Whom Shall we go? You have the words of everlasting life!

In a sense, it echoes the response of the Israelites in our first reading from Joshua – when they answered his question of whom will you serve? The “gods” your ancestors served or the Lord, whom brought us and our ancestors out of slavery in the land of Egypt, who performed great miracles, including provide mana in the desert, the pre-cursor to the bread that Jesus gives for the life of the world. They replied they will also serve the Lord, for He is our God. (The same God and Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ.)

So, the questions for each of us as we head into our holiday weekend and the unofficial start to fall:  Who do you listen to? Or, what words resonate with you?

For 5 weeks we have gradually heard how God revealed how much He has loved us throughout time, including how he blessed the 5000 people that Jesus fed with words and real food and ultimately how Jesus is the Bread of Life. As the Gospel selection today starts: many disciples were saddened because they could not accept what Jesus was saying (that He gives us His flesh to eat and His blood to drink). Who do you listen to? Our faith is hard, but God, through Jesus, gives us strength for our journey, Jesus in the Eucharist, the Bread of Life. I hope that over these last 5 weeks, a further understanding or deepening of each of our faith has occurred. Either way – what resonates with you?—Fr. Steve

El Evangelio de este domingo concluye el Discurso del Pan de Vida del capítulo 6 del Evangelio de Juan, con la declaración de fe y la pregunta retórica de Pedro:  Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna.

En cierto sentido, se hace eco de la respuesta de los israelitas en nuestra primera lectura de Josué, cuando respondieron a su pregunta de ¿a quién serviréis? ¿A los «dioses» a los que sirvieron sus antepasados o al Señor, que nos sacó a nosotros y a nuestros antepasados de la esclavitud en la tierra de Egipto, que hizo grandes milagros, entre ellos proporcionar maná en el desierto, el precursor del pan que Jesús da para la vida del mundo? Ellos respondieron que también servirán al Señor, porque Él es nuestro Dios. (El mismo Dios y Padre de nuestro Señor, Jesucristo).

Así pues, las preguntas para cada uno de nosotros mientras nos dirigimos a nuestro fin de semana de vacaciones y al comienzo no oficial del otoño:  ¿A quién escuchas? O, ¿qué palabras resuenan en ti?

Durante 5 semanas hemos escuchado gradualmente cómo Dios nos ha revelado cuánto nos ha amado a través del tiempo, incluyendo cómo bendijo a las 5000 personas que Jesús alimentó con palabras y comida real y, en última instancia, cómo Jesús es el Pan de Vida. Como empieza la selección del Evangelio de hoy: muchos discípulos estaban tristes porque no podían aceptar lo que Jesús decía (que nos da su carne para comer y su sangre para beber). ¿A quién escuchas tú? Nuestra fe es dura, pero Dios, a través de Jesús, nos da fuerza para nuestro camino, Jesús en la Eucaristía, el Pan de Vida. Espero que durante estas últimas 5 semanas, se haya producido una mayor comprensión o profundización de cada una de nuestra fe. En cualquier caso, ¿qué te resuena?
