A few months ago, I had the singular privilege of a private meeting with Pope Francis. We were a small group of pastors, composed largely of non-Catholics. The Holy Father wished to discuss our work for Christian unity. The phrase I remember him saying with greatest frequency was: Tutti dentro. It means, “Everyone in.” He clearly wanted us to emphasize that the Church is made for the whole human race, not a select few. At the center of his concern was unity. We are all brothers and sisters, he said multiple times. The Church’s primary longing is for everyone to join Her.

This longing is at the heart of this Ascension feast day. We hear the longest recorded prayer of the one whom Pope Francis represents. Jesus’ concern is unity, praying to the Father, “that they may be one, even as we are one” (John 17:11). The deep unity of all people in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit is what Jesus most desires. It is what he ascends to accomplish.

Do we have this same burning desire in our hearts, too? Or do we see Christian unity as an unrealizable dream? Or worse, as something that threatens our own narrow tribal interests? This feast is a wonderful time to consider our attitude toward Christian unity, and to commit to do whatever we can to foster it. En este pasaje del Evangelio de Juan, Jesús deja su testamento plasmado en la oración. Aboga por todos nosotros ante el Padre: “Yo les he dado tu mensaje y el mundo los ha odiado porque no son del mundo, como tampoco yo soy del mundo. No te pido que los saques del mundo, sino que los defiendas del Maligno” (Juan 17:14-15). Esta oración también es llamada oración sacerdotal. El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica en el número 2747 lo explica de la siguiente manera: “La tradición cristiana acertadamente la denomina oración sacerdotal de Jesús. Es la oración de nuestro Sumo Sacerdote, inseparable de su sacrificio, de su paso, {pascual} hacia el padre donde él es consagrado enteramente al Padre”.

El Catecismo continua en el número 2748: “En esta oración pascual, sacrificial, todo está recapitulado en Él. Dios y el mundo, el Verbo y la carne, la vida eterna y el tiempo, el amor que se entrega y el pecado que lo traiciona, los discípulos presentes y los que creerán en Él por su palabra, su humillación y su Gloria. Es la oración de la unidad”. El secreto aquí está en no dejarnos llevar por el maligno, por el pecado que todo lo descompone, lo divide y lo pudre. No dejemos que la división reine en la familia, la sociedad y en el mundo.
Luchemos siempre por la paz. Pidamos, en este domingo, que seamos signos visibles de esperanza, sabiendo que tú Señor, no nos has dejado solos en el mundo. ¡Ven Espíritu Santo! ©LPi
