We are now midway through Chapter 6 of John’s Gospel, which is also known as the Bread of Life Discourse. We have heard that Jesus fed the five thousand with five loaves of bread and two fish. However, that was not enough for the people. They wanted more! Jesus explained to them that He is the Bread of Life, come down from Heaven, from God, Our Father.

Today we hear the response from those He fed, they murmured that they “knew him” because they were also from Galilee, and they knew His parents. How can He say He came down from heaven? He reiterated who He was and told them to stop complaining. He reminded them that their ancestors ate manna in the desert, which was provide by God. He pointed out that those who ate the manna died.

Jesus is explaining to them that He is the living bread come down from heaven and goes on to say that whoever eats this bread will live forever. Of course, Jesus is not speaking of bread or rolls that we can make at home or get at store or restaurant. Jesus is predicting that the bread that He will give us is His flesh for the life of the world. Here He points to what is to come on Holy Thursday and Good Friday.

Jesus, the Bread of Life, sustains us, the weary and even those who murmur. But will His audience (then and now) accept His offer?

When we come to Mass and Holy Communion, do we believe that Jesus is present in the “bread and wine” offered to God and consecrated by the Holy Spirit? Do we believe Jesus is truly present? Let us pray that we may be open to the Holy Spirit to accept Jesus’ Body and Blood, His Real Presence so that we can receive Him and gain strength for our faith journey and the journey to eternal life. Nos encontramos a mitad del capítulo 6 del Evangelio de Juan, conocido también como el Discurso del Pan de Vida. Hemos oído que Jesús alimentó a los cinco mil con cinco panes y dos peces. Sin embargo, eso no fue suficiente para la gente. Querían más. Jesús les explicó que Él es el Pan de Vida, bajado del Cielo, de Dios, Nuestro Padre.

Hoy oímos la respuesta de los que alimentó: murmuraban que "le conocían", porque también eran de Galilea y conocían a sus padres. ¿Cómo puede decir que bajó del cielo? Reiteró quién era y les dijo que dejaran de quejarse. Les recordó que sus antepasados comieron maná en el desierto, que fue provisto por Dios. Señaló que los que comieron el maná murieron.

Jesús les está explicando que Él es el pan vivo bajado del cielo y continúa diciendo que quien coma este pan vivirá para siempre. Por supuesto, Jesús no está hablando del pan o panecillos que podemos hacer en casa o conseguir en una tienda o restaurante. Jesús está prediciendo que el pan que nos dará es Su carne para la vida del mundo. Aquí señala lo que vendrá el Jueves Santo y el Viernes Santo.

Jesús, el Pan de Vida, nos sostiene a nosotros, a los cansados e incluso a los que murmuran. Pero, ¿aceptarán sus oyentes (entonces y ahora) su oferta?

Cuando venimos a Misa y comulgamos, ¿creemos que Jesús está presente en el "pan y el vino" ofrecidos a Dios y consagrados por el Espíritu Santo? ¿Creemos que Jesús está realmente presente? Oremos para que estemos abiertos al Espíritu Santo para aceptar el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Jesús, Su Presencia Real, para que podamos recibirlo y ganar fuerza para nuestro camino de fe y el camino hacia la vida eterna.
