We have now entered the Holy Season of Lent with the themes of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. In today’s Gospel Jesus is tempted after he had fasted for 40 days. Recently, I met with the Faith Formation children from our Spanish Community, to discuss the importance of Lent. When I asked the children how and why Lent is so long, immediately one of the girls answered – it’s because Jesus fasted in the desert for 40 days. I responded that I had never heard a child give that correct answer! So, the devil tempted Jesus after He had fasted for the 40 days. He experienced temptations just like we are tempted. Yet, despite all of that, He did not fall to the devil’s tricks. We on the other hand fast from certain things – food, drink, candy, dessert, or other things such as gossip, lying, excessive TV, etc. We offer our fasting up in a way of prayer and thanksgiving to God for all the gifts we have received. Additionally, in the first reading, we hear that Moses received the basket of offering of the first harvest from the fields. These readings tie in the three pillars of Lent: Almsgiving, Fasting, and Prayer. As mentioned before, there are many different ways to pray – one of which is reading the Scriptures, selections from the Bible daily. Each week we list in the bulletin (usually on page 3) the biblical readings that will be used at mass each day. May I suggest you look them up – they can easily be found at www.USCCB.org. Of course, if you have one of the Little Black Books, that is another way to make daily prayer a priority during these 40 days of Lenten Journey. Hemos entrado en el tiempo santo de Cuaresma, dedicado a la oración, el ayuno y la limosna. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús es tentado después de haber ayunado durante 40 días. Recientemente, me reuní con los niños de Formación en la Fe de nuestra Comunidad Española, para hablar de la importancia de la Cuaresma. Cuando pregunté a los niños cómo y por qué la Cuaresma es tan larga, inmediatamente una de las niñas respondió - es porque Jesús ayunó en el desierto durante 40 días. Respondí que nunca había oído a un niño dar esa respuesta correcta. Así que el diablo tentó a Jesús después de que hubiera ayunado durante 40 días. Experimentó las mismas tentaciones que nosotros. Sin embargo, a pesar de todo eso, no cayó en los trucos del diablo. Nosotros, en cambio, ayunamos de ciertas cosas: comida, bebida, dulces, postres, u otras cosas como chismes, mentiras, exceso de televisión, etc. Ofrecemos nuestro ayuno a modo de oración y agradecimiento a Dios por todos los dones que hemos recibido. Además, en la primera lectura, oímos que Moisés recibió el cesto de la ofrenda de la primera cosecha de los campos. Estas lecturas enlazan los tres pilares de la Cuaresma: La limosna, el ayuno y la oración. Como ya se ha dicho, hay muchas maneras de rezar, una de las cuales es leer las Escrituras, selecciones de la Biblia cada día. Cada semana publicamos en el boletín (normalmente en la página 3) las lecturas bíblicas que se utilizarán en la misa de cada día. Le sugiero que las busque - se pueden encontrar fácilmente en la página web www.USCCB.org. Por supuesto, si tienes una de las Libretitas Negras, es otra manera de hacer de la oración diaria una prioridad durante estos 40 días de Cuaresma.
