The First Sunday of Advent November 27, 2022

Today marks the start of the Advent Season where we prepare for the one who is to come. This year we have a full four weeks of Advent to prepare. While we have just finished our Thanksgiving Day feast, we now turn to preparation for Christmas, the birthday of the one who is to come.  John the Baptist sent his disciples to Jesus to ask, “Are you the one who is to come?”

While we don’t hear those words until the Third Sunday of Advent in the Gospel, they should help us throughout these four weeks of this holy season.

For us, we should ask that question not only of people but of things.  We have many things and perhaps we could change that question to is this “thing” or event or person going to lead us to the one who is to come or take us away from him?

These days are busy – with getting “things” ready – making our lists, shopping, wrapping, even shipping packages, etc.  For many of us who still write cards, letters, or emails, it makes these days of the Advent Season even busier.

But are those activities getting us closer or pushing us further away from the “one who is to come.” Lastly, where is the prayer in this Holy Season? Lets pray each day during Advent to and for the one who is to come into a time to contemplate who we are really preparing for – Jesus or someone else?                     Fr. Steve

- P. Steve
