The Catholic Community of Northern Columbia County

During the last few months, a number of parishioners have participated in the Listening Sessions on assorted topics, especially looking to the future of our parishes and the Catholic Community of Northern Columbia County (CCNCC). One of the concerns that has been raised is that we are in “transition,” and many changes are happening, including from one pastor for each parish to one pastor for three parishes. So, let me start by apologizing to those who are new to the CCNCC or to the idea of the three parishes in one network. When I was named pastor, I was under the impression that since the three parishes (St. Joseph, St. James, and St. John the Baptist) were already under one pastor (Fr. George), that there was “progress” towards becoming one faith community of the CCNCC. Perhaps not everyone understands this. So, over the next few weeks, I will do my best to clarify what has happened in our three parishes, which are now becoming a Tri-Parish Community, and where we are headed, all the while maintaining each individual church community as distinct, while working together as a Tri-Parish Community in the CCNCC, with the help of the ideas from the Listening Sessions.

Additionally, with the help of Debbie Halpin (Pastoral Associate and Business Manager), who did some research, there is a much history that came before the CCNCC was even an idea in anyone’s mind. For example, in 2009, the parish of Nativity/St.Mary’s, merged with Holy Family under the direction of Fr. O’Connor. In 2014, before Fr. George was named as pastor, Fr. Gary was named interim pastor of both St. John’s and St. Joseph’s after Fr. Jack’s and Fr. Joe’s retirements. Prior to Fr. George’s arrival, the Trustees from all three parishes met to produce a plan to hire a Director of Operations to oversee the day-to-day operations of the three parishes.

As you can see, in the last twelve years (five in my pastorate), there have been a number of changes and transitions from one pastor in each parish to one pastor of the three parishes, and then came Covid-19, which affected many plans and is still affecting our parishes today. Again, I apologize for thinking that most, if not all, parishioners were understanding that the Tri-Parish structure, under one pastor, was further along than it is. Cambios/Transición/Mirando hacia el futuro

Durante los últimos meses, varios feligreses han participado en las sesiones de escucha sobre diversos temas, centrándose  especialmente en el futuro de nuestras parroquias y de la Comunidad Católica del Norte del Condado de Columbia (CCNCC). Una de las preocupaciones que se ha planteado es que nos encontramos en una «transición» y que se están produciendo muchos cambios, entre ellos el paso de un párroco por cada parroquia a un párroco para tres parroquias. Así pues, permítanme comenzar pidiendo disculpas a quienes son nuevos en la CCNCC o a quienes les resulta nueva la idea de las tres parroquias en una sola red. Cuando fui nombrado párroco, tenía la impresión de que, dado que las tres parroquias (San José, Santiago y San Juan Bautista) ya estaban bajo un mismo párroco (el P. George), se estaba «avanzando» hacia la creación de una única comunidad de fe de la CCNCC. Quizás no todo el mundo lo entiende así. Por eso, durante las próximas semanas, haré todo lo posible por aclarar lo que ha sucedido en nuestras tres
parroquias, que ahora se están convirtiendo en una Comunidad de Tres Parroquias, y hacia dónde nos dirigimos, manteniendo al mismo tiempo cada comunidad eclesial individual como distinta.

Además, con la ayuda de Debbie Halpin (asistente pastoral y directora administrativa), que ha investigado un poco, hay mucha historia que antecede incluso a que la CCNCC fuera siquiera una idea en la mente de nadie. Por ejemplo, en 2009, la parroquia de Nativity/St. Mary’s se fusionó con Holy Family bajo la dirección del P. O’Connor. En 2014, antes de que el P. George fuera nombrado párroco, el P. Gary fue nombrado párroco interino tanto de St. John’s como de St. Joseph’s tras las jubilaciones del P. Jack y del P. Joe. Antes de la llegada del P. George, los administradores de las tres parroquias se reunieron para elaborar un plan para contratar a un director de operaciones que supervisara el funcionamiento diario de las tres parroquias. Como pueden ver, en los últimos doce años (cinco de ellos bajo mi pastorado), ha habido una serie de cambios y transiciones, pasando de un párroco en cada parroquia a un único párroco para las tres, y luego llegó la COVID-19, que afectó a muchos planes y sigue afectando a nuestras parroquias en la actualidad. Una vez más, pido disculpas por pensar que la mayoría, si no todos, los feligreses entendían que la estructura de las tres parroquias, bajo un solo párroco, estaba más avanzada de lo que está.
