Weekend of May 11 and 12, 2024

"The value of persistent prayer is not that God will hear us, but that we will finally hear God.”

After the Resurrection, Jesus spent 40 public days with his followers.  He continued to teach his disciples, preparing them to carry on his work.  He told them not to leave Jerusalem, and to wait for the Spirit.  Then, on the fortieth day, he rose up and disappeared into the clouds on the day we call the Solemnity of the Ascension.  (A solemnity is an important day in the Church calendar.)  10 days after the Ascension is the Solemnity of Pentecost, which this year falls on the weekend of May 18.  Pentecost is the coming of the Holy Spirit and is wonderful day for the Catholic Community of Northern Columbia County to celebrate our RCIA candidates and our young people receiving the Sacraments of Initiation!

The Vigil for Pentecost is 4 pm on Saturday, May 18, at St. John the Baptist.  Fifteen people will receive the Sacrament(s) of Initiation.  Please join us to celebrate this joy-filled time in person or on line.  Most importantly, please keep each of them in your prayers: Will, Nick, Conner, Solomon, Tyler, Emma, Hunter, Steven, Alejandro, Karina, Jessica, Alexis, Elizabeth, James, and John.

Our younger people will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the 2nd time during the final week of May in preparation for their receiving First Eucharist in June.  Please pray for them as they continue their faith journey: Kathryn, Tyler, Ella, Sam, Marcus, Declan, Aleigha, and Jackson.

Next Family Faith Formation Gathering is:

Sunday, May 12 at 9 am at St. James

Children’s Offertory

Each Sunday Mass, all children will be invited to bring non-perishable items forward during the Offertory when the other gifts are brought to the altar.  The items brought to Mass by children will be donated to the local food pantries.  One of the parents from St. James made the suggestion to collect items as another way to practice the Corporal Works of Mercy – this year’s Family Faith Formation theme. We encourage families to talk with their children about ways they can help others facing food insecurity.
