What is Christianity finally about? These days if you ask almost anyone who doesn’t know the Bible you’ll probably hear an answer like this: “Being a good person” or “following the golden rule.” No offense to the golden rule, but our faith is simply much stranger than that. This week’s feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord is a luminous example of this. Jesus becomes radiantly and overwhelmingly beautiful. The glory of God literally shines forth from his body and even his clothes. Here we see that Christianity is not mainly a moral system, but a relationship with God in Christ, one that finally makes human beings gloriously beautiful.

Now we can see our good and bad deeds in a new and decentered way. Our morality isn’t about a heaven or hell scorecard. It’s about lives open (or closed) to transfiguration, lives capable of revealing the glory of God in Christ to the world. Spouses, children, friends, co-workers, priests, consecrated women and men, and so on — we are all called to let the beauty of Jesus make our lives beautiful, little by little. Nuestra vocación cristiana tiene su raíz en la revelación del amor de Dios por medio de Jesús. Este domingo, pidámosle a Dios, que nos dé el regalo de seguir escuchando su voz y profundizar en su Palabra: “¡Este es mi Hijo, el Amado; éste es mi Elegido,  ¡escúchenlo!” (Mateo 17:5). Señor, tres discípulos tuyos fueron los elegidos para acompañarte al monte y ser testigos de verte transfigurado. Hoy, también a nosotros nos ofreces momentos íntimos para estar contigo, para admirar todo lo que haces por nosotros en el vivir de cada día. Nuestro compromiso de cristianos es estar bien atentos a tu diaria presencia en nuestra vida.

Jesús, antes de su Pasión, nos muestra su Transfiguración para que estemos listos a entender el misterio de su sufrimiento. El misterio de amor, dar su vida por nosotros. Gloria y sufrimiento se unen mostrando el infinito amor de Dios. Ante el sufrimiento, no debemos tener miedo, sino fijarnos cómo Jesús es valiente en aceptar la voluntad de su Padre. La experiencia de los discípulos fue de gozo y de miedo, sin embargo, Jesús anima diciendo: “Levántense, no tengan miedo. Ellos levantaron los ojos, pero ya no vieron a nadie más que a Jesús” (Mateo 16:7-8). Él nos levantará de todos nuestros sufrimientos y miedos. La esperanza debe estar puesta en su resurrección. Los momentos de fe y gracia que el Señor nos da, nos alentarán. ©LPi
