This weekend we hear John the Evangelist start the Gospel off with Jesus saying: “Do not let your hearts be troubled.  You have faith in God, have faith also in me.” These words are used many times at funerals and wakes.  It continues where Jesus tells his disciples that He is going to prepare a place in heaven for his followers.  He then states that “where I am going you know the way.”  Thomas (one of the twelve) states “We do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”  Jesus replies that He is the way the truth and the life.  Jesus has prepared a place for all believers! He has promised to come back to take us home to heaven when it is our time. It is a wonderful image for mourners to hear that Jesus has taken their loved one home.

Later in the same Gospel relates to times that we feel lost and don’t know which way to turn, especially with regards to our faith.  I remind those mourning that Thomas didn’t know where Jesus was going, or what he meant so he had reservations and worries.  Therefore, think about this: if one of the core followers of Jesus had doubts, reservations, worries and questions, so can we! We need to keep reminding ourselves that Jesus IS the way, the truth, and the life. While it won’t eliminate our questions or doubts, etc., it will help us along the way to get closer to God! Este fin de semana escuchamos a Juan el evangelista comenzar el Evangelio con Jesús diciendo: “No se turbe vuestro corazón. Tened fe en Dios, tened fe también en mí”. Estas palabras se usan muchas veces en funerales y velatorios. Continúa donde Jesús les dice a sus discípulos que va a preparar un lugar en el cielo para sus seguidores. Luego afirma que “adonde yo voy tú conoces el camino”. Thomas (uno de los doce) dice: "No sabemos a dónde vas, entonces, ¿cómo podemos saber el camino?" Jesús responde que Él es el camino, la verdad y la vida. ¡Jesús ha preparado un lugar para todos los creyentes! Él ha prometido regresar para llevarnos al cielo cuando sea nuestro tiempo. Es una imagen maravillosa para los dolientes escuchar que Jesús se ha llevado a su ser querido a casa.

Más adelante en el mismo Evangelio se relaciona con momentos en los que nos sentimos perdidos y no sabemos qué camino tomar, especialmente en lo que respecta a nuestra fe. Les recuerdo a los que están de luto que Tomás no sabía adónde iba Jesús, o lo que quería decir, así que tenía reservas y preocupaciones. Por lo tanto, piense en esto: si uno de los principales seguidores de Jesús tenía dudas, reservas, preocupaciones y preguntas, ¡nosotros también podemos! Necesitamos seguir recordándonos que Jesús ES el camino, la verdad y la vida. Si bien no eliminará nuestras preguntas o dudas, etc., ¡nos ayudará en el camino para acercarnos a Dios!
