Happy New Year! Yes, New Year – the Church New Year that is!

Doesn’t it seem that Advent is early this year? We just celebrated the Thanksgiving Holiday this pastThurs day and now, at the end of November we’re starting the season of Advent!? While retailers and others want you to start shopping earlier and earlier, we should not rush the Christmas Season! Today we start the season of Advent (the new year of the Church). It may seem a few days early because we’ll actually have almost four full weeks of this holy season!

Advent, while a time of preparation for the coming of Jesus, it is also the start to the church’s new liturgical year. We use a new cycle of readings, this year, Cycle “C,” which the gospel readings draw mainly from St. Luke. In the Roman Missal (the book the priest uses at the altar), we go back to the very first page of prayers and start with the First Sunday of Advent. We pray and long for the coming of the Lord Jesus. While we pray in anticipation of commemorating His first coming, we joyfully await His second coming, when he will come in glory!

We light the advent wreath’s candles one each week, to remind us that we are getting closer to seeing the light of the world, Jesus on this coming Christmas Day (Eve) and His return to bring us to the Kingdom of God. We pray, watch, and wait! More in the weeks ahead!

¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Sí, Año Nuevo, ¡el Año Nuevo de la Iglesia que es!

¿No parece que el Adviento es temprano este año? Acabamos de celebrar el Feriado de Acción de Gracias el jueves pasado y ahora, a fines de noviembre, ¡estamos comenzando la temporada de Adviento! Si bien los minoristas y otros quieren que comience a comprar cada vez más temprano, ¡no debemos apresurar la temporada navideña! Hoy comenzamos el tiempo de Adviento (el nuevo año de la Iglesia). ¡Puede parecer unos días antes porque en realidad tendremos casi cuatro semanas completas de esta temporada santa!

El Adviento, si bien es un tiempo de preparación para la venida de Jesús, es también el comienzo del nuevo año litúrgico de la iglesia. Usamos un nuevo ciclo de lecturas, este año, el Ciclo "C", que las lecturas del evangelio extraen principalmente de San Lucas. En el Misal Romano (el libro que el sacerdote usa en el altar), volvemos a la primera página de oraciones y comenzamos con el Primer Domingo de Adviento. Oramos y anhelamos la venida del Señor Jesús. Mientras oramos en anticipación de conmemorar Su primera venida, esperamos con alegría Su segunda venida, ¡cuando vendrá en gloria!

Enardemos las velas de la corona de Adviento una cada semana, para recordarnos que estamos cada vez más cerca de ver la luz del mundo, Jesús en este próximo día de Navidad (Víspera) y Su regreso para llevarnos al Reino de Dios. ¡Oramos, observamos y esperamos! ¡Más en las próximas semanas!
