The Baptism of the Lord—Matthew 3:13-17

Apple ran a commercial not long ago called “Behind the Mac – Greatness.” It shows artists and creators, such as Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish, and Lady Gaga, working behind their MacBooks. The narration says, “There’s a certain kind of person who doesn’t wait for greatness. They make it.” It’s a compelling message. There’s beauty in using our gifts with passion and purpose. But there lies a hidden weight in that idea: If you are what you make, what happens when you can’t anymore? When the project fails, the passion fades, or the spotlight moves on, where is greatness then?

Today’s Gospel offers a differing vision of greatness. Jesus steps into the Jordan River. He hasn’t preached, healed, or performed a
single miracle. Then the heavens open, and the Father speaks: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” It’s not a reward for success. It’s not earned. Before he does anything “great,” Jesus receives the greatness of his identity from the Father. And so do you. At your baptism, God said the same thing over you: “You are my beloved.” That is your true identity, not constructed or earned but received. When we see ourselves and others this way, everything changes for the better. We discover a greatness that can never be taken away.

This week, reflect on your baptism: look up the date, thank God for it, pray for those baptized with you, or visit the church where

El bautismo del Señor—Mateo 3:13-17

Hace poco, Apple lanzó un anuncio titulado «Behind the Mac – Greatness» (Detrás del Mac: la grandeza). En él aparecen artistas y creadores, como Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish y Lady Gaga, trabajando con sus MacBook. La narración dice: «Hay un tipo de personas que no esperan a que llegue la grandeza. La crean». Es un mensaje convincente. Hay belleza en usar nuestros dones con pasión y propósito. Pero hay un peso oculto en esa idea: si eres lo que haces, ¿qué pasa cuando ya no puedes hacerlo? Cuando el proyecto fracasa, la pasión se desvanece o el foco de atención se desplaza, ¿dónde queda entonces la grandeza?

El Evangelio de hoy ofrece una visión diferente de la grandeza. Jesús se adentra en el río Jordán. No ha predicado, ni sanado, ni
realizado un solo milagro. Entonces se abren los cielos y el Padre dice: «Tú eres mi Hijo amado; en ti tengo mis complacencias».
No es una recompensa por el éxito. No se ha ganado. Antes de hacer nada «grande», Jesús recibe la grandeza de su identidad del
Padre. 

Y tú también. En tu bautismo, Dios dijo lo mismo sobre ti: «Tú eres mi amado». Esa es tu verdadera identidad, no construida ni ganada, sino recibida. Cuando nos vemos a nosotros mismos y a los demás de esta manera, todo cambia para mejor. Descubrimos una grandeza que nunca nos podrá ser arrebatada. Esta semana, reflexiona sobre tu bautismo: busca la fecha, da gracias a Dios por ello, reza por los que se bautizaron contigo o visita la iglesia donde tuvo lugar.
